About “Lee Greene N.Y. Calling”

Lee Greene is one of the most identifiable voices on Alto and Tenor Saxophone to come along in the past 20 years. His unique style of melodic embellishment is sure to rank him among the many great
masters he has worked with over the years – Buddy Rich, Illinois Jacquet, Frank Foster, Joe Newman, Clark Terry, and Jimmy McGriff, to name a few.
Lee arranged this album in its entirety and his compositional skills are displayed with finesse on the four original tracks. His confident interpretation of the Carmichael evergreen “Skylark” makes a mature statement and the Latin undercurrent heard throughout much of the CD is evidence that Lee is at home in a variety of rhythmic settings. His arrangement of “All or Nothing at All ” displays this point clearly. Lee’s original composition “Irie Mon” is a well-crafted theme inspired by the Cole Porter standard “But It’s Alright”. The lovely Jerome Kern melody from Showboat, “Nobody Else But Me” is handled as captivating rhumba, with a wonderful fluegelhorn element provided by Eddie Henderson. The albums title track, “New York Calling “is a powerful theme that captures the turbulence of New York and clearly exhibits the level of commitment necessary to compete in such an arena.
