The sound of a quartet with two horns, bass, and drums is one of my favorites. The open space gives the listener a place as the interplay unfolds. This CD really sounds like a band playing catchy heads that only a fine tuned band could make happen. The performances are great having a relaxed intensity that draws the listener in with many surprises. John and Matt are both adept at playing the time and playing across it in a liquid fashion. Within the quartet there come many different colors from the alto, tenor and bass clarinets. There are also dynamic duos happening that keep the sonority of the group always interesting. Matt Hong's playing has always inspired me and here is a great example of it.
